 Zambia has set its sights on a middle income development trajectory and the long term vision 2030 is destined to reach that goal. The United Nations, working together, supports the Government and people of Zambia in their efforts to realize this aspiration, while contributing to the strategic national policies and programmes that help make a vision, a reality. And the Millennium Declaration (MD) and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which was signed on to by the President of Zambia in 2000, reflect some of the milestones along the way. The MDGs come alive only when they have a real impact on the lives of people.A One UN effort and a partnership to support the government and people of Zambia starts with a shared commitment to the MDGs and to the process of poverty reducing and equalising growth that must underpin such. This means supporting an economy and society where people feel part of and benefit from growth, where livelihood opportunities grow not for the few but for the majority, where gaps between women and men are addressed and minimized, and where the natural resource base is protected and managed in ways that actually sustains long term human development.
The UN Country Team has availed of a gradually growing body of data and evaluative evidence undertaken by national and international partners and the UN system, to focus its coming programme in the five outcome areas of HIV and AIDS; Sustainable Livelihoods and Food Security; Human Development; Climate Change, Environment and Disaster Risk Reduction and Response; and, Good Governance and Gender Equality. These are reflected in the new UN Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF), 2011-2015, which captures our support to a set of common results. The bottom line, and that which we hope to be measured by, is the contribution to an ongoing capacity transformation - i.e. the strengthening of capacities of core national and sub national institutions to plan, manage and deliver effectively in ways that improve the lives of the people they serve.
We hope to use the UN website as a public communication and dialogue space, to highlight and update all stakeholders on progress in the above areas, and to tell the stories of institutions as they move forward. We also hope to provide updates of the UN reform process in Zambia as we move towards a One UN Zambia to focus our efforts in ways that provide a more teamed up and strategic collective contribution to Zambia’s development, together with our national and international partners.
